In 2017 when Dave’s dad was first diagnosed with GBM, we raced to Portland to be there for his surgery. We flew out of Denver with a suitcase full of socks, Nice Bike socks. We had this idea that they would become a tangible reminder that this was a family venture, that we were in it together.
Every pair we gave away, to the nursing staff, to the doctors, to the family members, every pair acted as an induction to the Nice Bike family, to Team Nice Bike. It was maybe silly to put that kind of pressure on some socks.
On the morning of the surgery, Dave’s sister and I sat in awaiting room, hoping to see the neurosurgeon as he made his way into the operating room. We sat and waited, wearing our socks. The surgeon came through the waiting room and spied us. He stopped. He pulled up the leg of his scrubs. He showed off that pair of Nice Bike socks we had given him. He was operating that day as a member of Team Nice Bike. That one moment, that one pair of socks will be forever imprinted on my mind.
This year for the Dura Mater Hill Climb we had custom socks made. And every pair that we hand over to the amazing riders and volunteers, is another person we add to Team Nice Bike.
Though all our rider spots are filled for the 2019 ride, there is another way to join Team Nice Bike and be part of our battle against GBM. Come by the shop and get your pair of DMHC socks. They might seem like a small item to pit against brain cancer, but when you add up every pair you are faced with the might that is Team Nice Bike.
